A rally of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Akure, Ondo State capital was on Friday, initially disrupted by the police.
Eyewitness said policemen initially teargassed the rally shortly after it was addressed by the Ondo State chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Smart Omodunbi Jnr, administrative secretary of APC in Ondo State, said the party leaders had assembled at the meeting point for the rally, tagged, “A Walk for Change”, to sensitize the good people of Ondo State on why they have to walk and work for a change in Nigeria.
He said after the briefing by the party chairman, men of the Nigeria Police Force disrupted the gathering by firing teargas canisters at the members in a bid to stop the peaceful rally from proceeding.
Omodunbi said it took the intervention of the Osun State governor and Yemi Osibajo, the APC Vice Presidential candidate for the rally to then proceed as planned.
The APC secretary described the police action as barbaric and extremely disturbing. He accused Olusegun Mimiko, Ondo State governor and President Goodluck Jonathan as being behind the police action.
