Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have rescued Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, the younger sister of former Minister of Power Bayo Adelabu, alongside her 12-year-old twin sons after a deadly overnight operation in Ibadan that left two suspected kidnappers dead.
The victims were freed at about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday following a coordinated police raid that escalated into a fierce exchange of gunfire with the abductors. Security sources confirmed that firearms were recovered from the scene and that all three victims were found alive and in stable condition after spending three days in captivity.
The abduction occurred on Wednesday morning, June 3, 2026, in the Challenge/Elewura area of Ibadan while Mrs. John-Paul was driving her children to school. Armed men reportedly intercepted her vehicle and whisked them away in a swift operation that triggered widespread concern across the state.
The incident was promptly confirmed by the family through media aide Comrade Femi Awogboro, while Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde visited the family shortly after, assuring them of a coordinated security response and swift action to secure the victims’ release.
Police operatives launched an intensive manhunt across suspected hideouts and escape routes, which eventually led to Saturday’s rescue mission. The operation turned violent when officers engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle, resulting in the neutralisation of two suspects while others reportedly escaped with injuries.
Mrs. John-Paul, 43, is the youngest of five children in the Adelabu family. She is a former staff member of the Central Bank of Nigeria and First Bank Pension Custodian who recently retired and relocated to Ibadan with her children while preparing to join her husband in the United States.
Following the rescue, family sources say she is expected to expedite her relocation abroad for safety and family reunification. The family has expressed gratitude to security agencies for their swift intervention, even as authorities continue investigations to track down other members of the kidnapping gang and determine possible collaborators.
The successful rescue has been widely praised, but it also highlights ongoing concerns about kidnapping incidents in parts of Oyo State and the broader Southwest region. Police authorities say efforts are ongoing to dismantle the criminal network behind the attack and prevent further occurrences.
