‘We Are Working Corpses’ – Borno Catholic Priest

Rev. Fr. John Bakeni, vice Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Borno State has said that Nigerians living in troubled areas like Borno State are now living in apparent fear especially for the past five days that the Boko Haram Insurgents have intensified their onslaught on innocent citizens.

Bakeni said the “crowd of fear, tension and uncertainty is now hovering over us,” adding that even when the people are seen going about their business, “we are actually working corpses.”

Bakeni made the statement this Tuesday, September 9 in a telephone chat with TELL magazine. The Catholic priest said over 2000 Widows and more than 300 Orphans have been displaced in recent attacks on towns and villages in the state that left 59 churches destroyed.

“We are in a state of hopelessness right now,” said Bakeni who also said, “We are still trying to understand what is happening” because “People are traumatised. People are anxious. People are tensed.”

The Priest blamed the recent gains achieved by the insurgents on what he described as the “inaction of the government and the silence of the majority.”

He also said that the realities on ground in Borno State is far different from what the federal government is telling Nigerians.
