The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following reports of the death of celebrated Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, who reportedly passed away at the age of 40 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

According to family sources and close associates, the actor died earlier this week in a Lagos hospital after his health reportedly deteriorated in recent months. Unconfirmed reports circulating online claimed the Nollywood star had been battling advanced liver or kidney cancer privately and was placed on life support in his final hours.

The shocking news has sparked widespread grief across the entertainment industry, with fans and colleagues expressing disbelief over the sudden loss of one of Nollywood’s most admired leading men.

Born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Alexx Ekubo rose to prominence after emerging as the first runner-up at the 2010 Mr. Nigeria pageant. A graduate of Law from the University of Calabar, he quickly transitioned into acting and became one of Nollywood’s most recognizable faces.

Known for his charm, fashion sense, and strong screen presence, the actor starred in numerous blockbuster films including The Bling Lagosians and Okafor’s Law. Over the course of his career, he appeared in more than 100 productions spanning romance, comedy, and drama genres.

Beyond acting, Ekubo was admired for his humanitarian efforts and his ability to connect with fans across different cultures and languages, including Igbo and Hausa.

News of his passing triggered an emotional outpouring from fellow entertainers and admirers on social media. Actress Funke Akindele shared a heartfelt tribute, mourning the actor and recalling cherished moments they shared together.

Several other Nollywood stars, including Peter Okoye, Timini Egbuson, Kate Henshaw, and Bolanle Ninalowo, also paid tribute to the late actor, describing him as warm, professional, generous, and deeply loved within the industry.

His reported private health struggle has also reignited conversations around cancer awareness, routine medical checkups, and access to quality healthcare in Nigeria.

At the time of filing this report, the family of Alexx Ekubo had yet to release an official statement detailing funeral arrangements.

This remains a developing story. Further updates are expected from the family and Nollywood industry bodies in the coming hours.
