Nigerian hurdler Tobi Amusan delivered a brilliant performance at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, clinching silver in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.29 seconds. The race ended with Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji storming to gold in 12.24 seconds, setting a new national record, while American Grace Stark earned bronze in 12.34 seconds.

The achievement marks Nigeria’s first medal of the championships and a powerful comeback moment for Amusan, who had finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics in the same stadium. Now under the guidance of renowned coach Glen Mills, she proved her resilience on the global stage.

“I remember in 2021 I ran here and came 4th. The moment I heard the World Championships was going to be staged here (Tokyo), I had PTSD. But then I had to snap out of it and tell myself I wasn’t leaving here without the GOLD medal; but I’ll take the Silver,” Amusan said, visibly emotional after the race.

Her celebratory embrace of Kambundji underscored a spirit of sportsmanship that quickly went viral on social media. Nigerians flooded timelines with praise for her grit and consistency, while also renewing conversations about the lack of adequate government funding for athletes competing at the highest levels.

For Amusan, the silver medal is not just a personal triumph but also a reminder of her enduring status as one of Nigeria’s greatest sporting icons — and a symbol of hope for young athletes chasing global glory.
