A viral social media video has ignited widespread debate across Nigeria after a young woman, identified in online posts as Fasilat, Wasilat, or Wasila, allegedly defied a longstanding Yoruba traditional taboo by secretly filming the sacred Oloolu Egungun masquerade during its annual festival in Ibadan.

The woman is said to have disguised herself to record the revered masquerade despite repeated warnings that women must neither see nor record the Oloolu procession. Videos now circulating online claim she later experienced continuous, unexplained bleeding and emotional distress, leading to a traditional cleansing ceremony conducted by custodians of the Oloolu shrine.

The incident reportedly occurred shortly after the 2026 Oloolu Masquerade Festival, which was held between July 27 and July 30 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Before the festival, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, publicly reminded residents and visitors of the strict customs surrounding the Oloolu masquerade. The monarch warned that women must not see or cross the path of Oloolu, while members of the public were also prohibited from taking photographs or recording videos of the sacred procession.

The Oloolu Egungun is regarded as one of Ibadan’s most revered ancestral masquerades. According to Yoruba tradition, the masquerade traces its origins to the 19th-century war history of the Aje family of Ode Aje. Traditional beliefs also hold that its sacred costume contains a female skull, and that any woman who sees it risks severe spiritual consequences, including menstrual complications, illness or misfortune.

According to claims shared widely on TikTok and other social media platforms, the woman allegedly recorded the masquerade in the Oremeji area of Ibadan before uploading the footage online. She later appeared in emotional videos claiming she began experiencing persistent bleeding and severe fear shortly after the recording.

In the clips, she repeatedly apologised, saying she acted out of curiosity and did not fully appreciate the spiritual significance of the masquerade or the consequences of violating the age-old prohibition.

Additional videos circulating online show the woman’s mother pleading with traditional custodians for forgiveness on her daughter’s behalf.

The footage also captures what is described as a traditional cleansing ceremony. During the rites, the young woman’s hair was reportedly shaved, she was dressed in red clothing, while sacrificial items, including giant African snails (ìgbín) and a ram, were presented as part of prayers and rituals intended to seek mercy from Oloolu.

However, several of the more dramatic claims circulating online remain unverified.

Some social media users have alleged that the woman may never be able to bear children, while others have gone further by claiming she died after the incident. As of Sunday, August 2, 2026, there has been no official confirmation from the Olubadan’s Palace, the custodians of the Oloolu masquerade, Oyo State authorities, or medical officials regarding her identity, health condition, the effectiveness of the cleansing rites, or reports of her alleged death.

The incident has generated intense reactions across social media, with many Nigerians divided over its interpretation.

Supporters of Yoruba traditional institutions argue that sacred cultural taboos deserve respect regardless of personal religious beliefs or modern perspectives. They insist that centuries-old customs surrounding the Oloolu masquerade should not be treated as entertainment for social media content.

Others have questioned the supernatural explanations surrounding the incident, urging that any reported medical symptoms should be independently verified by healthcare professionals. Some commentators have also described the controversy as another example of the growing tension between preserving indigenous cultural heritage and the influence of smartphones, social media and digital content creation.
