Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has congratulated Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election, describing the outcome as a significant affirmation of the power of the people in a democracy.

Obi, in a statement shared on his X account on Sunday, said the Osun election demonstrated that citizens have the ultimate power to determine who governs them when they remain vigilant and committed to protecting their democratic rights.

“I warmly congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election and the good people of Osun State on this important democratic victory,” Obi said.

He added that the people of Osun had “spoken with courage and clarity,” reaffirming that the power to choose political leaders belongs to the electorate.

Obi attributed Adeleke’s victory to what he described as the governor’s commitment to the people, compassion for their needs and achievements in office, saying these factors helped earn him renewed confidence from voters.

The former presidential candidate also singled out Osun youths for commendation, praising their vigilance and determination to defend what he described as their democratic mandate.

“Their vigilance and determination demonstrate that when citizens stand firmly to protect their votes, the forces of good can overcome the forces of darkness,” Obi stated.

According to him, the Osun election should serve as a reminder that democracy can only thrive when citizens remain conscious of their civic responsibilities and insist that their votes are respected.

“Democracy is strongest when citizens are alert, conscious of their civic responsibility, and determined to ensure that their votes count,” he said.

“Every genuine vote must be respected, and every lawful mandate must be protected.”

Obi subsequently linked the lessons from Osun to the 2027 general elections, urging Nigerians to become more actively involved in the electoral process.

He called on citizens to remain informed, participate in elections, cast their ballots and, importantly, protect their votes from the polling unit through the collation process.

Obi said ordinary Nigerians, particularly those experiencing hunger, insecurity, deprivation and economic hardship, possess the power through their votes to demand a different political direction.

He also appealed to political parties and their supporters to place the interests of Nigerians above partisan considerations, while urging all stakeholders to embrace peace, unity and respect for the rule of law.

“Elections should never be battles of violence, but contests of ideas, competence, character, and service,” Obi said.

He expressed hope that the outcome of the Osun election would strengthen Nigerians’ confidence in the democratic process and encourage greater civic participation ahead of 2027.

“May the Osun experience strengthen our confidence in the democratic process and inspire Nigerians everywhere to remain vigilant and committed to building a just, secure, prosperous, and truly people-centred nation,” Obi said.

“A New Nigeria is Possible.”

Obi’s statement comes as political attention increasingly turns toward the 2027 elections, with the Osun result likely to fuel fresh discussions about voter participation, electoral accountability and the ability of citizens to influence political outcomes through the ballot.
