Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II has imposed a two-week fasting and prayers on all Edo people, indigenes and non-indigenes, and in the Diaspora, beginning from Thursday, September 26 to October 9, 2024. The spiritual exercise is to be observed from 6 am to 6 pm daily.
A public announcement to this effect issued on the authority of the royal father, Oba Ewuare 11, dated September 24, 2024, and signed by Chief Stanley. O. Obamwonyi, (Esere of Benin), said the purpose of the fasting and prayer is to thank God and ancestors for a peaceful conduct of the Edo State governorship election which held last Saturday; for warding off evil from the state; for the bountiful harvest ahead of the commencement of consumption of new yams; against sudden death, and for peace in individual homes, families, the state, and the country at large.
The statement reads:
“This Palace Public Announcement is issued on the authority of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin.
“His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin, uses this medium to inform the general public that from 26th September 2024 to 9th October 2024, all sons and daughters of Benin Kingdom and, by extension indigenes and non-indigenes living in Edo State, to embark on two weeks fasting and prayer. The Omo N’Oba also enjoins the general public during these two weeks fasting and prayer to appreciate God Almighty for the peaceful conduct of the 2024 Gubernatorial Election, and for warding off all forms of evil out of our land.
“In addition, and in line with our age-long tradition that before the commencement of the consumption of the yearly new yam (Emorhϙ), it is important that we fast and pray to God Almighty and the Royal Ancestors for bountiful harvest and to shield us away from sudden death and for peace and tranquility in our individual homes, families, state and country at large. All Benin sons and daughters at home and in the Diaspora are to fast and pray during this period. The two weeks fasting period is from 6a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The Omo N’Oba prays to God Almighty to grant us peace and happiness as we all embark on this fasting and prayer.
