Lagos Power Surge: FG Unlocks 272MW as Tegbe Commissions Major Transmission Upgrades in Alausa, Lekki

The Federal Government has commissioned major transmission upgrades in Alausa and Lekki, Lagos, adding a combined 272MW of bulk power capacity to two of the state’s key economic corridors.

The projects, commissioned by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national transmission network, eliminate infrastructure bottlenecks and improve the movement of available electricity to distribution companies and consumers.

At the Alausa transmission station, an ageing 30MVA transformer was replaced with a new 100MVA transformer. The intervention increased the station’s total capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA and raised the bulk power available to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) by 80MW.

The Lekki project delivered an even larger expansion. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) installed two additional 60MVA, 132/33kV transformers alongside nine new 33kV feeders.

The upgrades increased the Lekki substation’s 132/33kV capacity from 120MVA to 240MVA, representing an additional 192MW of capacity.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremonies, Tegbe outlined the Federal Government’s approach to addressing infrastructure constraints in the power sector.

“Identify the bottleneck. Invest in it. Remove the constraint. Unlock the capacity.”

The minister said the projects reflected President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tackling infrastructure challenges that have constrained Nigeria’s economic growth.

According to Tegbe, the government would continue to address ageing transmission infrastructure and other bottlenecks preventing available generation capacity from reaching electricity distribution companies and end users.

The Lekki upgrade was executed by Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited with support from the World Bank. The project also includes a 300MVA, 330/132kV transformer scheduled for energisation in November 2026, which is expected to further strengthen transmission capacity in the area.

TCN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the Alausa project was also delivered by Shanghai Electric under a World Bank-funded initiative.

Abdulaziz said the completed upgrade would support more stable and reliable electricity supply to at least 70,000 residents through IKEDC once the facility is fully energised.

He described the development as evidence of TCN’s continued efforts to build a stronger transmission network capable of transporting increasing power generation to distribution companies across Nigeria.

Tegbe commended TCN, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), IKEDC, Shanghai Electric and the World Bank for their contributions to the projects.

The minister also praised Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for creating an environment that supports infrastructure investment and development.

The commissioning comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenge of converting available generation capacity into reliable electricity for homes, businesses and industries.

For Lagos, where demand for electricity remains exceptionally high because of its large population and concentration of commercial and industrial activities, the Alausa and Lekki upgrades represent a significant expansion of the infrastructure needed to move more bulk power into the distribution network.

With the two projects adding a combined 272MW, alongside the planned 300MVA transformer at Lekki, the Federal Government is betting on transmission expansion as a key part of efforts to reduce power constraints and support economic activity in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
