Vincent Tenebe, Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to grant amnesty to prisoners who are graduating from the institution.
He made the appeal on January 20 at a pre-convocation press conference in Lagos. Tenebe said that granting amnesty to the prisoners after graduation would enable them contribute to the socio-economic wellbeing of the country. He noted that the university was not only for academic and vocational knowledge and skills, but also for character formation and reformation, which he said, the prisons are also known for.
Tenebe, however, disclosed that three prisoners, two from Kirikiri Maximum Prisons, Lagos, and one from Enugu Prisons are in the university’s graduating list of over 7,000 students for January 22 convocation at the National Theatre in Lagos.
The graduands from the institution’s study centres nationwide, according to him, would be conferred with Bachelor, Masters Degree, Diplomas and Certificates in various courses. This year’s convocation, he added, will be the fourth in the series.
