A fresh political storm has erupted over the rescue of dozens of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, with Governor Seyi Makinde calling for an independent international investigation into the Federal Government’s handling of the operation.
Makinde’s demand, which includes a call for the United Nations and international human rights organisations to examine the circumstances surrounding the rescue, has sparked heated reactions from the Presidency, the Senate, and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), deepening political tensions over one of Nigeria’s most shocking school abductions in recent years.
The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen suspected to be members of the Ansaru terrorist group invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community Grammar School (Esiele), and L.A. Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area near Ogbomoso.
During the attack, dozens of pupils—some reportedly as young as two years old—and several teachers, including Principal Mrs. Rachael Folake Alamu, were taken into the forests of the Old Oyo National Park.
The tragedy claimed two lives. One teacher was killed during the invasion, while another reportedly died in captivity after the abductees endured 56 days of harsh conditions, including alleged beatings, starvation, and being chained by their captors.
Security agencies announced the victims’ rescue around July 10, describing the operation as an intelligence-driven mission in which no ransom was paid. Authorities also confirmed the arrest of eight suspects believed to be connected to the kidnapping.
President Bola Tinubu praised the security agencies for the operation, attributing the attack to Ansaru militants and describing the rescue as a major victory against terrorism.
However, while welcoming the return of the victims and pledging state support for their rehabilitation, Governor Makinde questioned several aspects of the operation, describing the circumstances surrounding both the abduction and rescue as “grave and unusual.”
Speaking on July 13, the governor called for a transparent international investigation, insisting that Nigerians deserve a full account of what transpired during the 56-day ordeal. His position was later endorsed by the Oyo State House of Assembly.
Makinde’s comments immediately triggered political backlash.
The Senate criticised the governor’s remarks as “unstatesmanlike,” while the Presidency and the Oyo State chapter of the APC accused him of attempting to politicise a national security issue for political advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The political controversy intensified after the APC’s governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, presented a brand-new Toyota Camry to Principal Alamu.
Her previous vehicle was reportedly destroyed or taken during the kidnapping.
In her first major public interview since regaining freedom, Alamu recounted the terrifying experience, explaining that her vehicle was used by the kidnappers to transport victims to the location where they were reunited with the schoolchildren and other abductees.
She also rejected claims circulating on social media that the kidnapping had been staged, insisting that the victims endured genuine trauma throughout their captivity.
Following their rescue, the pupils and teachers received medical treatment and psychological counselling at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso before being discharged and reunited with their families.
