Unknown gunmen attacked the Abuja residence of John Odigie-Oyegun, national Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the early hours of Monday, January 12.
The gunmen were said to have gone straight into the APC chairman’s bedroom where they met only his wife.
The woman was attacked while the gunmen searched the house frantically looking for the APC chairman.
Odigie-Oyegun was said to be attending a political meeting at the time of the attack.
In the meantime, the APC office in Okrika Local Government, Rivers State was also attacked in the early hours of Monday.
The attackers injured three members of the party as they prepared for a rally in Rumueme, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
Christian Asifamaka, APC Chairman in Okrika Local Government Area, explained that some unidentified person threw dynamites in the secretariat, which exploded at about 3.14am.
He noted that the incident occurred in Abam Ama community, adding that his office was worse hit as the explosion pulled down the entire wall.
“The explosion which occurred at 3:14am exactly destroyed our secretariat, bringing down the walls. The damage was quite extensive with the chairman’s office being the worse hit.
“The All Progressives Congress in Okrika views this latest attack as a deliberate provocation by our opponents, the People’s Democratic Party to draw the APC into a battle that would destabilize our beloved local government area. This is unfortunate and the APC in Okrika would not allow Okrika to become a hotbed of crises as the PDP would wish,” he said.
Asifamake pointed out that the PDP’s resort to violence was as a result of its knowledge that Okrika people had rejected them because of their inability to attract any meaningful development to the LGA.
“We however wish to warn our brothers in the PDP to remember that the land of Okrika has been known to defend itself and its people against aggression and that any Okrika person who brings crisis to the land answers for it,” he added.
Tony Okocha, APC leader in Obio/Akpor and a House of Representatives candidate, explained that members of the APC were almost exhausting their patience over the continued attack by PDP members, warning that his party may resort to self-help should the police fail to do the right thing.
However, Dakuku Peterside, governorship candidate of APC in Rivers State has condemned in very strong terms, the multiple bomb explosions that rocked the secretariat in Okrika.
He expressed shock at this latest attack, which he said, “portends danger, if unchecked, for next month’s election”.
“I don’t want to believe that this signposts what to expect on February 14 and 28 because Rivers people are ordinarily peace loving and we reject violence. I am optimistic that police will do something about this pattern of violence that we are currently witnessing. If they don’t, they will force ordinary people to resort to self-help and self-help does not do anyone any good,” he said.
It could be recalled that on January 6, when APC had their presidential rally at Adokiye Amasiemaka Stadium, some of the party members who were coming from Abonnema, Degema and Asari-Toru were attacked around Sama Junction; also people who were also coming from Khana and Gokana were also attacked around Sakpenwa Junction. Some other group coming for the same rally was attacked around Elele, all in Rivers State.
