Ban Ki-moon, United Nation’s Secretary General has condemned in strong terms, the attack on a Notre Dame de Fatima Catholic church in Bangui, the Central African Republic’s capital.
Over eleven people, including the priest were killed on Wednesdaywhen gunmen suspected to be Muslims reportedly threw grenades and spurted the courtyard with bullets. Several other persons were also abducted in the violence.
The attack came about 48-hours after three Muslim youths were killed by suspected anti-Balaka elements on their way to an inter-communal reconciliation football match.
The statement from the office of the Spokesperson of the UN Secretary-General said, “The Secretary-General strongly condemns the recent attacks in the Central African Republic, including yesterday at the Church of Notre Dame de Fatima in Bangui in which an unknown number of people, including the priest, were killed and others were abducted.”
Ki-moon urged CAR’s Transitional Authority to do everything within its reach to prevent further violence in the troubled capital and called for an immediate end to the series of violence and retaliatory attacks.
The attack was the worst on Christians since Muslim Seleka rebels were deposed from power in January.
