An elderly farmer who was reportedly swept away by floodwaters during heavy rainfall in Anambra State has been found alive after spending several days stranded in a remote bush, in what many residents have described as a miraculous survival.

The survivor, identified as Mr. Ifeonyemetara Ezennaya, a native of Iffite Nnobi in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, was rescued by fellow farmers who stumbled upon him while heading to their farms.

According to eyewitnesses, the elderly man was found weak, exhausted, and covered in mud after enduring days in the wilderness following the flooding incident. His rescuers immediately cleaned him up, offered him water, and provided emergency assistance before taking him to safety.

Local accounts indicate that Mr. Ezennaya had gone to his farm carrying a cutlass when heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding in the area. The powerful current reportedly swept him away into a thick bush, where he became trapped after the floodwaters receded.

Unable to find his way home and physically weakened by hunger, exhaustion, and exposure to the elements, he remained stranded until the chance discovery by other farmers.

One of the rescuers recalled the emotional moment they found him.

“He was lying helpless in the bush, completely covered in mud. He looked exhausted and almost unconscious. We never imagined anyone could survive there for that long.”

After being revived, the elderly farmer identified himself as a resident of Iffite Nnobi, bringing relief to his family and members of the community who had feared the worst.

Videos of the dramatic rescue have since gone viral on social media, attracting thousands of reactions from Nigerians expressing gratitude, amazement, and prayers for the survivor’s full recovery.

Many users described the incident as a miracle, while others praised the compassion and quick response of the farmers whose actions ultimately saved a life.

Flooding Raises Fresh Safety Concerns

The incident comes as communities across Anambra State and other parts of southeastern Nigeria continue to experience heavy rainfall and recurring floods during the peak of the rainy season.

Flooding has become a growing concern in several communities, damaging homes, destroying farmlands, disrupting transportation, and putting lives at risk, particularly among rural farmers and other vulnerable residents.

The rescue has also renewed calls for improved flood preparedness, including better drainage infrastructure, effective early warning systems, and increased public awareness on safety during extreme weather conditions.

Residents are urging people, especially those living in flood-prone communities, to take extra precautions by informing family members before travelling to farms or remote locations, avoiding flooded routes during heavy rainfall, and keeping communication devices within reach whenever possible.

Community members also stressed the importance of regularly checking on elderly relatives during periods of severe weather.

Although government authorities are yet to issue a detailed statement on the incident, eyewitness accounts and widely circulated videos have continued to generate public attention.

For many Nigerians, Mr. Ezennaya’s remarkable survival stands as a powerful reminder of both the devastating impact of flooding and the life-saving difference ordinary citizens can make through timely intervention.

As the rainy season continues, emergency management experts are urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and heed weather advisories to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
