Ugandan Abolishes Anti-gay Law

The Uganda Constitutional Court has annulled the strict anti-gay legislation the country passed into law in February 2014.

Uganda, like many African countries, is a conventional society where many people oppose gay rights.

Homosexual acts were already illegal before the law, and it advanced this notion by allowing life imprisonment for “aggravated homosexuality” and ban of the “promotion of homosexuality.”

Several donors have cut aid to Uganda due to the adoption of this law.

Earlier drafts of the law made it a crime not to report homosexuals while gay acts were made punishable by death sentence.

However this fragment was later removed, and the death sentence, reduced to life imprisonment
