The Christian community in Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, a renowned evangelist and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA). He reportedly passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80.

The news of his passing was confirmed in reports published by Info Daily and PM News Nigeria on Monday. According to the reports, the revered preacher died peacefully after a brief illness. His Wikipedia page has also been updated to reflect the date of his death, further confirming the sad development.

Born on January 7, 1945, in Asaga, Ohafia, Abia State, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai was one of Nigeria’s most respected preachers, known for his dynamic teaching, miracle crusades, and humanitarian outreaches that spanned over five decades.

A Life Dedicated to Evangelism

Rev. Uma Ukpai began his ministry in the early 1970s and later established the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, headquartered in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Over the years, he became a household name across Africa through his large-scale revival meetings and television ministry.

He was known for his passionate preaching on faith, healing, and unity in the body of Christ. His ministry’s crusades drew tens of thousands of worshippers across Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, and other African countries.

Earlier this year, the revered man of God celebrated his 80th birthday, an event widely reported in the media. According to Premium Times, followers and partners gifted him ₦80 million in appreciation of his lifetime of service to God and humanity.

Outpouring of Tributes

Since news of his death broke, tributes have continued to pour in from Christian leaders, politicians, and ordinary Nigerians who described him as a “spiritual father,” “visionary,” and “general in God’s army.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and several Pentecostal ministries have expressed deep sorrow, calling his death a huge loss to the church and the nation.

“Rev. Uma Ukpai was more than a preacher — he was an institution of faith, wisdom, and hope for millions,” one cleric said in reaction to the news.

Family and Funeral Plans

As of press time, the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association and his family have not released official funeral arrangements. Sources close to the family say a public service of songs and burial programme will be announced soon.

His Enduring Legacy

Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai’s teachings and evangelistic missions transformed lives across generations. Beyond his crusades, he also established several Christian initiatives, including the Uma Ukpai School of Theology and Biblical Studies and humanitarian projects focused on education and community development.

He is survived by his wife, Pastor Dr. Philomena Uma Ukpai, children, and grandchildren.
