The police authorities in Lagos State have reacted to a viral video which surfaced on Wednesday in which a policeman was hit by the driver of a Toyota SUV who was desperately maneuvering his car to escape from the officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA and the police. The driver, who in the process of reversing his car to flee the scene, hit the policeman identified as David Zapania, who fell over the bridge into the canal.

A statement on Thursday by the public relations officer of the Lagos State Police Command, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, a chief superintendent of police, CSP, said Zapania, the Police Inspector involved in the accident “is alive and healthy”. He however said Zapania suffered fracture on his left hand.
Adejobi explained that the incident occurred on Wednesday February 24 at about 5.30 pm when some LASTMA personnel, backed up by the police on enforcement duty within the state, tried to stop the driver of a Toyota SUV driving against traffic along the Murtala Mohammed International Airport road.

According to the PPRO, “The driver resisted arrest and while trying to escape, a police inspector, David Zapania, was knocked down from the bridge and fell into a carnal. The police inspector was rescued and rushed to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Center where he was attended to and discharged, but sustained fracture on his left hand”.

He said “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has sympathised with the policeman and restated his zero tolerance for gross violation of traffic laws and regulations in the state”.

Adejobi said the “reckless” driver, 38-year-old Sunday Okodo, of Alose Close, Bony Crescent, Apapa, has been arrested and his vehicle impounded. He said Okodo would be arraigned on Thursday before a mobile court at Oshodi.
