Pele Stable After Kidney Operation

peleEdson Arantes do Nascimento, Brazilian football legend better known as Pele, is said to be recovering after he underwent a surgery at a hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

74-year old Pele was admitted in the evening on Wednesday, November 12 after he complained of stomach pains, which forced him to cancel a book signing event in Santos.

Pele underwent an operation to remove stones from his kidney, bladder and urethra on Thursday morning and he is said to be in a stable condition.

A statement issued by Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, where Pele is being treated, said the operation has been a successful one and Pele is doing well.

“After conducting tests, the presence of kidney, urethral and bladder stones were found, causing obstruction to urine flow. This morning he underwent a surgical procedure to remove the stones and he is currently clinically stable and recovering,” the hospital’s statement said.

The three-time World Cup winner had undergone a hip surgery in a Brazilian hospital in 2012. He opted to have the surgery after complaining of long-term pain in his hip.

Pele was inducted into Goal’s Hall of Fame on Tuesday, November 11, 2014.
