Tears flowed freely on Saturday when 66 bodies of South Africans who lost their lives after a six storey guesthouse collapsed in the premises of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN on September 12 were handed over to South African authorities.
The corpses 40 from Mainland Hospital, Yaba and 26 collected from Isolo General Hospital, Isolo, Lagos State were handed over to South African government officials who arrived Lagos yesterday.
The remains were loaded into two refrigerated trucks sent in by the South African government for repatriation and onward internment in their home country.
Oladapo Obafunwa, the chief medical examiner in charge of the victims revealed that only 80 bodies including victims from Nigeria, Togo and other neighbouring countries, were identified, from the 116 dead bodies recovered from the scene of the tragedy.
The professor of forensic pathology, Lagos State University College of Medicine, LASUCOM, told newsmen that his team of medical experts worked in conjunction with the South African delegates to identify the 66 South African corpses.
This development mean that 18 dead bodies of South African nationals are yet to be identified.
