The need for parents to inculcate the culture of reading and buying at least a book in a month is key in having children imbibe a reading culture, Funmi Ilori, Chief Executive Officer, CEO, FunmiVirtuous Educational Consult Limited has said.
Speaking at an eventorganised for schools in Lagos by Vateeca World to mark the 2014 universal children day with the theme, “Stop Violence Against Children,” Ilori expressed the need for parents to read as they are models for their children.
“The truth is that when parents model reading to their children, they will follow suit. But what we find out is that parents want their children to read but they don’t want to be the role model. So for parents we want them to find time to read out of their busy schedule and we also want them to encourage the children. For me setting a target of buying at least a book in a month, will go in a long way in having the children embrace reading,” she said.
Karima Ayobami Oladipo,Project Manager of the event tagged, “Let’s Read Africa 2014,”said this year’s event was aimed at instilling the passion for reading in children, so as to make them aware of their rights as children.She also said that for a nation to grow, educating its citizens is key.
“Let’s Read Africa 2014” event which was held at Agidingbi Grammar School Hall, Lagos State, was centered on reading, the reader and the Internet. Pupils from Agidingbi Junior Secondary School;Masvel Divine Montessori School; Lea Valley School; Ezekiel Primary School; First Learning Hall School; Agidingbi Senior Grammar School;Ifako International School; Ar-Razaq International School and a host others who were in attendance participated in spelling drills, talent competition, motivational speeches, storytelling, and book reviews.
Chinwendu Ezeugo, a pupil of Ifako International School who won the spelling drill competition advised children to study very well so as to win competitions like her.
Abiodun Idris Oladipo,organizer of the event who is a social entrepreneur and CEO, Vateeca World, said this year’s event was a success and next year’s event is going to be bigger.
