NiMet To Create 1,000 Automatic Weather Stations Across Nigeria

In furtherance of its determination to produce economical and reliable meteorological

information to the various sectors of the economy, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency

(NiMet) has said that it’s set to determine regarding 1,000 automatic weather
stations (AWS) in the country.

The agency, during a statement in capital of Nigeria Mon, hinted that it’s signed a memo of

Understanding (MoU) with Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO) of Netherlands to develop a sturdy network of AWS in an African nation.
The collaboration, it noted, would be for 5 years in the initial instance, and additionally geared toward advancing TAHMO’s vision to enhance sub-Saharan Africa’s capability for hydro-meteorological observation.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director-General of NiMet, Prof. Sani Abubakar

Mashi, said: “The partnership will increase the density of its network of stations and enhance its goal of one weather station per one hundred kilometers, in compliance with the quality stipulated by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).”

He said the project will take off straight away with the delivery of one hundred AWS by TAHMO to be installed across the country at no cost to the agency.
