Ademola Adeleke, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP has emerged winner of the Saturday governorship election in the state. He won in 17 of the 30 local government areas in the state, polling a total of 403,371 votes to beat Gboyega Oyetola, the incumbent. The latter who is of the All Progressives Congress, APC won in 13 local government areas and scored 375,027 votes.

For Oyetola, it was a big battle, fighting on all sides. He had to contend with the internal crisis in his party, which created divisions that resulted in breakaway factions that either worked for opposition, even if remotely, or took away support that would have been assets for the governor. Of principal importance is the rift between him and Rauf Aregbesola, his boss and immediate predecessor. Aregbesola was out of the country during the election. It was with that divided army that he faced a united front led by Adeleke.

It’s somewhat of a return battle between the two politicians who had a first encounter in 2018 that ended in a controversial victory for Oyetola.

Adeleke is a younger brother of late Isiaka Adeleke, former governor of the state who died while in the Senate. And he certainly built on his brother’s popularity.

The results have been announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
