IGP Cautions Against Inciting Policemen

Suleiman Abba, Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, has warned Nigerians who incite officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force to desist from the act or face the wrath of the law.

In a statement issued today by Emmanuel Ojukwu, the Force Public Relations Officer, Abba was quoted as saying that some members of the public have adopted the mischievous path of inciting junior police officers to disrespect their oath of office.

The statement, which comes on the heels of the threat by some officers to embark on strike in protest of non-payment of their promotion allowances, warned against such action.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Nigeria Police Force will never tolerate any iota of indiscipline in the form of a strike, or work-to-rule among its personnel. Any officer found to be engaged in such a despicable act will be arrested and sanctioned in line with the Police Regulation and the Laws of the Federation,” the statement reads.

The IGP noted that dangers loom when police officers disobey superior orders and act outside the code of conduct.

He also warned members of the public to desist from incitement, saying these do not only serve as threat to the nation’s democracy but also do not portend well for public safety and security.

Ojukwu said every effort is being made in the meantime to meet the welfare needs of all police personnel, including the payment of promotion arrears, which, he said, has since commenced.
