President Muhammadu Buhari has sent back to the Senate the name of Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC for confirmation as substantive head of the agency. The president in a letter read to senators earlier today by Bukola Saraki, Senate President said Magu has been cleared of allegations of corruption after the ministry of justice went into the matter. Buhari, therefore, urged the senators to reconsider their earlier decision to deny Magu confirmation.
The Directorate of State Service, DSS had in a report sent to the Senate accused the EFCC boss of hobnobbing with corrupt persons, including living in a house paid for by one of such persons. The report apparently went to the Senate without the knowledge of President Buhari, who then asked the ministry of justice to look into the matter.
The verdict returned by the ministry thus put a lie to the claim by the DSS, which provided the ministry with the reports on which the ministry is currently trying some senior judges for corruption.
The same letter by the President also faulted the indictment of Babachir Lawal, secretary to the government of the federation, SGF. It said the Senate committee report was a minority document, having been signed by only three of the seven members of the committee. It also said the SGF was given the opportunity to defend himself before the committee. The latter remark probably lost sight of the fact that Lawal rejected the invitation by the committee, choosing to lampoon the Senate.
