Trump Takes Charge
America’s 45th president begins his four-year tenure after an electoral victory that still leaves many around the world stunned.
There is a prize that comes with success which even those opposed to the winner cannot deny him. For Donald Trump, the American business magnate, this statement rings true. The man whose astounding victory against Hilary Clinton last November in America’s Presidential election sparked a wave of protest in his country and left many around the world unhappy owing to the racist campaign he ran en route the election, finally came around to keep a date with destiny, January 20.
In company of his wife, Melania, and surrounded by thousands of people many of who may be opposed to him, Trump took the oath of office as United State of America’s 45 president. It was a scene many, months ago, considered impossible but would now have to live with, at least for the next four years. The oath taking was preceded by a church service at St John’s Episcopal Church in Washington DC and a visit to the White House where Trump and Melania were received by outgoing President Barack Obama and his wife. From there, both families proceeded to the Capitol Hill for the swearing-in ceremony, which had in attendance, all but one former living American Presidents. The odd man was George Herbert Bush, the country’s 41 president, who is ill. There, as is customary, Trump took the oath of office, promised to uphold America’s constitution and then went on to unfold his vision. He told the crowd that the moment was not really his but that of the American people who had long been neglected by the power brokers in Washington. Never again, he said, will the American people be ignored by those elected to serve them. “January 20th, 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again. The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer. Everyone is listening to you now…This moment is your moment, it belongs to you, ” he said, and promised never to let the people down. “For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have bore the cost. Washington flourished, but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered but the jobs left and the factories closed.” Henceforth, Trump added, “it’s going to be only America first. We will bring back our jobs, we will bring back our borders, we will bring back our wealth, and we will bring back our dreams.”
It was a truly historic moment for a man, who, prior to that moment, never held any elective position. The inauguration, at last, drew the curtain on one of the most divisive electoral campaigns in America’s history given the anti-Islamic views and immigration sentiments of Trump as against the liberal stance of her rival, Hilary Clinton but all eyes are now on the man to fulfill his promises which includes wiping off radical Islamic fundamentalism from the face of the earth.
How well he does this will be obvious as the days and months unfold.
