The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor, dramatist, and academic, Kola Oyewo, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Yoruba theatre.
The 80-year-old thespian passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026, after reportedly battling a brief illness. His death was first made public by fellow actor Kunle Afod on Instagram and later confirmed by members of his family, including his son, Adetoyese Oyewo.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Pa Kola Oyewo built a remarkable career that spanned more than six decades across theatre, film, and academia, earning him widespread respect within and outside Nigeria.
He began his acting journey in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, where he trained under pioneering theatre practitioners. Over time, he rose to prominence as one of the defining voices of Yoruba stage performance, later transitioning into Nollywood where he gained further recognition.
He is best remembered for his powerful role as Oba Lapite in the classic film Saworoide, as well as notable appearances in productions such as The Gods Are Not to Blame. His performances were widely praised for their depth, cultural authenticity, and commanding presence.
Beyond acting, Oyewo also distinguished himself in academia. He earned a PhD in Drama and lectured at several Nigerian institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University, and Ekiti State University, where he served as Head of the Department of Theatre and Media Arts. Through teaching and mentorship, he influenced a new generation of actors, directors, and scholars.
He was also honoured with the traditional title of Balogun of Oba-Ile, a recognition of his contributions to Yoruba culture and heritage.
Since news of his passing broke, tributes have continued to pour in from Nollywood colleagues, students, and fans, who describe him as a towering figure in Nigerian theatre and a mentor whose influence shaped the industry for decades.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days as the industry continues to reflect on his legacy.
May his soul rest in peace.
