Olusegun Adeosun, staff writer hardly allows challenges to overwhelm him, once set on a task. And he did contend with some in his assignment in the past weeks. For two weeks he combed Ile-Ife, in Osun State talking with and somewhat ‘stalking’ community leaders, kingmakers and princes. His mandate was to go look for those who are running for the coveted stool of the Ooni of Ife, the office vacated by Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II, who recently joined his ancestors.

He got some, after a lot of efforts and persistence, but there were those who could not be persuaded to talk. Some of these are people who being interested in the throne of their fore fathers did not want to flout the instructions of elders who cautioned against undue publicity. His story, The Men Who Want To Be Ooni, gives insight into the race, the historical background and the intrigues that characterise the exercise. It is the alternate cover in this edition.
