A dramatic yet hilarious video of a Nigerian woman performing a traditional riverside ritual has gone viral, after a group of men boldly turned the spiritual exercise into a moment of pure comedy.

The clip, shared by popular gossip platform Gossip Mill Nigeria (@GossipMillNaija) on X (formerly Twitter), has already recorded over 52,000 views and hundreds of reactions, sparking laughter, debate, and cultural reflection across social media.

In the short video, the unidentified woman, dressed in a flowing purple gown, is seen beside a colourfully decorated boat stacked with assorted items including bottled drinks, snacks, fruits, sweets, and other packaged goods. As she chants incantations in a blend of local dialect and Pidgin English, she carefully throws the items into the river, believed to be offerings to water deities for favour, protection, or prosperity.

The solemn moment, however, quickly takes an unexpected twist.
Almost immediately, several shirtless men stationed in the shallow waters leap, dive, and stretch with impressive agility, intercepting the offerings before they sink. One man’s mid-air catch of a flying bottle—reminiscent of a professional goalkeeper—sent viewers into fits of laughter, with many dubbing the men the “real water gods” or “human mami water.”

The footage, reportedly filmed in a riverine community in southern Nigeria, possibly within the Niger Delta region, reflects long-standing indigenous practices where water bodies are believed to house spiritual forces. Such rituals remain part of cultural expressions among several Nigerian communities.

Online reactions have been mixed. While many users praised the clip as peak Nigerian humour, others questioned the authenticity of the ritual and raised concerns over environmental pollution, particularly the disposal of plastic and non-biodegradable items into waterways.
Some commenters also warned against mocking traditional beliefs, while others insisted the scene perfectly captured the clash between ancient customs and modern street reality.
