Taming Hurricane Ebola and other Matters

Tell-Cover43The lead story in the coming edition of TELL is about the headache that the world carries at the moment. The burden that makes all governments and major organisations combine forces to fight a common threat: Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.

Apart from being the worst outbreak since the virus was discovered in 1976, the problem that the world is grappling with is that even those who are lucky to keep a safe distance from it are threatened by its impact on the environment. The result is the fear of famine, a debilitating blow on local economies and an assault on fragile health facilities as well as relations between otherwise friendly nations. Those are some of the issues Adejuwon Soyinka, deputy general editor, raises in the story Taming Hurricane Ebola!

There is also the story of presidential campaign gathering momentum. After an initial postponement, because of the aborted Adamawa State governorship election, the veteran, Muhammadu Buhari, retired general and former military head of state joined the tribe of aspirants for the post. He too, like Atiku Abubakar, former vice president and a fellow member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, put forward some of the programmes he hoped to do if elected. Perhaps aspirants will now begin to speak to real issues in their campaigns. But some developments at Buhari’s declaration appear to be causing rumblings within the APC. This is what Anayochukwu Agbo, general editor and head of Abuja bureau explores in his story: APC Quakes Over Buhari. They are two of the aspirants for the party’s ticket. Whoever wins will be APC’s answer to the contest with President Goodluck Jonathan of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, come February next year.

However, one man who does not see any of the two APC giants as a match for Jonathan is Shuaib Oyedokun, member of the Board of Trustees, BoT of the PDP. Why does he think so? You will get that in the interview he granted ‘Dipo Onabanjo, editorial director, Olusegun Adeosun, reporter and Adewale Adelola, photo journalist. It is titled The Trouble With Buhari and Atiku.

While these men are politicking, some Nigerians are searching for fortune through sports betting. That is the kernel of the story by Rukayat Yisau, reporter, in Living on Sports Betting. All these are our special reports for the week.
