Alimodu Sherif, former governor of Borno state has been nominated has the new chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Olisa Metuh, the party’s publicity secretary said today in Abuja that the choice of Sherif, who had served as a senator before he became governor, was a consensus among the party’s national caucus, PDP governors’ forum and the national assembly caucus of the party.

He, however, said that his appointment would not be announced until it had been ratified by the board of trustees and the national executive committee of the party. Sherif was formerly of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, a party that later merged with others to form the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. Though he reportedly played a major role in the formation of the ruling party, he left the APC due to some differences with other leaders. The former governor has had to deny links with Boko Haram, the insurgent group.

The issue of who becomes the new chairman of the party has caused division, resulting in Ahmed Gulak, former presidential adviser taking over in controversial circumstances. Uche Secondus, a deputy national chairman had been asked to assume the position in an acting capacity after Ahmed Muazu, also, a former governor resigned from the position. But there was a strong opposition to the choice of Secondus, because as Gulak argued the post was for the northeast and so cannot be appropriated by anybody from another zone.
