Private Registration Centres: TUC Faults FG’s Proposed Ban

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC has expressed displeasure at the plan of the Federal Government to proscribe private registration centres for the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board, JAMB, the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, the National Examinations Council, NECO and other examination bodies in the country, describing the plan as a move in the wrong direction.

In a statement signed by Bobboi Bala Kaigama, TUC president, and Musa Lawal, secretary general, the TUC stated that the proposed action would bring about over-crowding and loss of lives through stampedes, road accidents, robbery attacks and cause other unnecessary inconveniences to Nigerians.

“We simply do not see its logic. For any state to have only two registration centres is absurd, especially where the appreciable improvements that the Federal Government and various state governments have recorded in the educational sector are taken into consideration,” the TUC statement partly reads.

The TUC maintained that the proposed move could easily breed much corruption in the system and further dissuade students who are lukewarm about acquiring formal education from registering for the examinations.

It added that the policy, if implemented, will also give room to multiple errors as the students might not have the chance to cross-check the information they supplied, compared to the present situation of online registration where they promptly identify and

correct such errors.

The labour group, therefore, called on the Federal Government to discard the planned move and charged all examination bodies in the country to device other means of making the registration process more convenient and corruption-free.
