The Nigeria Police has declared that the incident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at the residence of the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, was a case of burglary and not an assassination attempt as reported.

But the South East Governors’ Forum on Wednesday rejected the claim, dismissing it as a ‘hasty conclusion’. The forum also called for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the case.

Director-General of the forum Prof. Simon Otuanya, while briefing newsmen on the position of the forum on the issue in Enugu on Wednesday, argued that if the suspects were buglers as claimed by the Police, they wouldn’t have prevailed on Ekweremadu’s son to take them to his father’s bedroom. He also said that the meticulous method in which the plot was executed points out something more life-threatening than burglary.

ome Nigerians have also cast doubts on the investigation said to have been carried out by the Police and the urgency with which it was concluded.

Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood on Tuesday stated that the arrested suspect whose name was given as Muhammed Yusuf had provided useful statement and further revealed that similar incident occurred at the residence of Haliru Adamu, a neighbour of the Senator. Cell phones and jewelleries were stolen by the suspects at Adamu’s residence, but that nothing was taken at the senator’s house.

The Police spokesman further said that the suspect has also been assisting the police in investigation into the matter and they have intensified efforts to arrest the other suspect.
