The police in Rivers State have dismissed the police sergeant, Bitrus Ossai, who shot dead a female police sergeant, Lovender Elemachi, last week in Port Harcourt.

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Joseph Mukan, disclosed this when he visited the family of the deceased police officer at Ozuzu, near Port Harcourt. He said the officer would soon be charged to court.

Mukan, who said the death of the female police officer came as a rude shock to the command, promised that the police would take care of the children the late officer left behind.

He said the killer policeman was dismissed after an orderly room trial indicted him for the killing of the late Elemachi. He said other colleagues of the dismissed officer who were with him during the incident, were still being investigated.

The CP said, “He was tried in orderly trial of which we found him culpable and we have dismissed him because we cannot charge him to court without being dismissed.

“So based on investigation of the Criminal Investigation Department, we found him guilty as charged. So it is left for the court now to determine. But by God’s grace, he’ll be in court.”

A member of the deceased officer’s family, Joseph Omechi demanded that the police placed the children of the deceased on scholarship and pay compensation to the family of the deceased.

He also asked that drastic punitive measures be taken against all those that were involved in last Thursday’s act to serve as deterrent to other police officers that take laws into their hands.

Meanwhile, the state police command has withdrawn all police officers attached to task forces on street trading and illegal motor parks in Rivers State.

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed this on Tuesday said all the personnel are back to the command headquarters along Moscow Road.

The killer policeman and his colleagues were on duty for the task forces when he shot dead the female police officer.
