The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Ogun State chapter, on January 27, called off its 10-day old strike.
The decision was announced after a meeting between the leadership of the union and representatives of the state government.
Dare Ilekoya, chairman of NUT in the state and Akeem Lasisi, his counterpart in the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools in Nigeria, addressed a joint press briefing after a congress of the two bodies held at the NUT Hall, Abeokuta.
“We are here today to tell the public that government decided to call us for discussions. We met and all our issues were looked into,” Ilekoya said.
Ilekoya said government had agreed to pay the October deductions with immediate effect, while outstanding would be paid later. The government also agreed to set up a committee that would involve all parties to review other outstanding issues.
“On this note, we, hereby, announce the suspension of the industrial action embarked upon by teachers in the state,” he announced.
Lasisi, on his part, appealed to members to comply with the union’s directive to resume work while stressing that the strike was not politically motivated. Lasisi said the action was a pure legitimate fight over their rights and welfare, stressing that their action should not be politicised.
He assured that their sacked colleagues would be reinstated.
