The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has commenced the training of 150 secondary school teachers on Information Communication Technology, ICT, designed to equip them with requisite knowledge on ICT.
Ibitoye Abosede, NDDCs Head of Corporate Affairs, said in a statement in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, that the exercise was part of the commissions educate-the-educators programme.
He said that the teachers would each receive free laptop computers in the commissions bid to boost ICT among teachers in the nine states that fall within the Commissions’ area of coverage.
The commission is fully focused on driving the process of providing infrastructure and building human capacity by partnering relevant organizations to build teachers capacity on ICT,” Abosede said.
He explained that it has come to the commissions notice that about 65 per cent of teachers in the Niger Delta are deficient in ICT, a development that he said, impacts negatively on the education sector.
NDDC seeks to reduce this ICT deficiency through our educate-the educators programme,” Abosede said.
The commission recently concluded the training of 5, 000 teachers in various science subjects.
He also said that 810 tertiary graduates have benefited from its scholarship scheme for youths in the region.
