There was pandemonium at a hall of residence at the University of Benin, UNIBEN, Ugbowo campus, Benin City in Edo State Monday night, when a final year student identified as Desmond Mayor was mowed down in a hail of bullets by gun men suspected to be cultists. Mayor, said to be the Chief of the Kegites Club (ILYA OVIA), was reportedly shot on the face at close range at his Hall 3 Campus and he died instantly with his gory, unrecognizable corpse sprawled on the floor in his room in a pool of blood.
The management of the University, in its reaction in a statement on Tuesday, condemned the “brutal and sad killing” of the final year male student in the department of public administration.
TELL gathered that the unknown gunmen invaded the hostel and released staccato of gun shots to scare away other students before going for their target, and pumped bullets directly on his face giving him no chance of survival. It was learnt that the daredevil assailants were in no hurry to get away as they watched him die before leaving the scene and made good their escape.
In its statement signed by the public relations officer, Benedicta Ehanire, UNIBEN’s management, while commiserating with the family and colleagues of the late student, enjoined other students to be calm as “the Police, as well as other Security Agencies, are working hard to fish out and arrest the culprits”.
The authorities also assured that “Management is also working closely with the internal security units in ensuring that such dastardly incident does not occur again within the University’s premises”.
Meanwhile, the remains of the murdered student had been deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) morgue.
