Minimum Wage: TUC Gives Senate 7 Days To Clarify Position

The Trade Union Congress, TUC, has given the Senate a 7-day ultimatum to clarify its position on the removal of Minimum Wages Laws from the Exclusive legislative list.

The TUC gave the ultimatum in a communique that was jointly signed by the President of the union, Bobboi Kaigam, and the National Secretary, Musa Lawal on Saturday, October 25.

In the communique, which came at the end of an emergency meeting of TUC’s Central Working Committee, CWC, in Lagos, the group said the clarification was important in order for a follow-up action to be taken.

The union said the purported amendment by the Senate, if allowed to stand, would produce a number of undesirable implications.

As stated in the communique, “The CWC observed that there are conflicting reports as to the true state of affairs. So, the leadership of the National Assembly should clarify the true position of the amendment within one week from today.”

It added that “we say no to the minimum wage deregulation and we resist the attempt with our capacity. The CWC-in-session mandate the leadership of the TUC to relate with the NLC and allies in the civil society organisations to mobilise without further delay for a follow-up action.”
