Kayode Lateef Jakande, second republic governor of Lagos State is Dead. He died at the age of 91. Jakande, fondly called LKJ, being initials of his name or Baba Kekere, the alias given him owing to his performance as governor during which he endeared himself to many people. He was thus rated as being next in policy initiative and performance to the sage and his political leader, Obafemi Awolowo. The latter was the leader and presidential candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN under which Jakande ran for election at the time. Awolowo is still highly referred many many within and outside the southwest geopolitical zone over three decades after his death, because of the great exploits of his political movement through which infrastructure and human developments were achieved.
Jakande later served in the regime of late General Sani Abacha, during which time he tried to replicate at the federal level the mass housing policy that made his administration in Lagos State popular.
Jakande, a former journalist and media executive will be remembered for his low profile lifestyle and dedication to duty. He was known then as the action governor.
He edited the Nigerian Tribune, owned by Awolowo before leaving to start his own newspaper , the Lagos News, published by John West Publishing Company.
Lateef Jakande was the first president of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria, NPAN.
