Lagos NUJ Games commence on Monday

The Lagos Chapter of the Nigeria Union Of Journalists, NUJ annual Games will hold from Monday, September 7 to Saturday, September 12 at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. The events would include Football competition, athletics, “Ayo”, Chess, Draughts, Marathon, Scrabble, Table Tennis and Tug of war.

The football event would involve 16 teams drawn into four groups consisting of four teams, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the quarterfinals. The draw ceremony which would be held at Lagos SWAN secretariat an the National Stadium, Surulere, would see defending Vanguard’s ‘Kirikiri Warriors’ face Complete Sports in the opening match. The “Kirikiri Warriors defeated Complete Sports last year to emerge winner.


Team Vanguard, Complete Sports, Business Plus and The source make up Group A while the teams in Group B are Lagos Ministry of Information, Federal Ministry of Information, Voice of Nigeria (VON) and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN). Group C has Lagos Television, Daar Communications, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), and Silverbird Television (STV). In Group D are last year’s runners-up-SportsDay, Daily Independent, The sun and Nigeria Television Authority (NTA).


Chairman of Lagos NUJ, Deji Elumoye has assured that this year’s game tagged “Med-view/Lagos NUJ Media Games” would be an improvement on previous editions. He urged participants not to use mercenaries, as the game is not a do-or-die affair but a way to foster cordial relationships among members.

“This is a yearly event in the calendar of the Lagos NUJ and we’ve promised to continue to organise the event with the support of all and sundry. We should also see the event as a way of making friends and relaxing after a hectic working hours in the office and not a do-or-die affair; so we must all shun the use of mercenaries,” he said.
Elumoye also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the major sponsors of the games, Med-View Airlines and other sponsors for identifying with the Union, calling on other corporate bodies to support the union in subsequent editions.
