Lagos Begins Demolition of 149 Buildings

No fewer than 149 defective buildings have been marked for demolition, the Lagos State government has said.

This is aimed at ensuring that more defective buildings do not collapse on occupants after a school building went down in Lagos Island early last week, killing no fewer than 20 persons including school children.

Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rotimi Ogunleye disclosed the government plan over the weekend after the demolition of five houses on Lagos Island.

According to the commissioner, 40 out of the 149 buildings marked for demolition have already been demolished.

The state government also warned landlords whose houses have been marked to either demolish such buildings or risk forfeiting them to the government.

He revealed that in some instances, where the owners and occupiers were served with notices and subsequently evacuated, people secretly returned to re-occupy the buildings, despite the sealing off of the structures by the government.
