Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, renowned jurist and retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria is dead. He was 96.
Justice Oputa who was the father of popular musician, Charly Boy, was head of the National Human Rights Violation Investigation Commission, NHRVIC, which investigated human rights abuses under the military.
The commission was set up by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The commission, popularly called the Oputa Panel, later extended its scope of coverage to include the years after independence.
Oputa who had been bedridden in the last one year, was at a point flown abroad but was said to have returned to the country recently after his condition improved.
He was said to have died in Charly Boy’s house in Abuja on Sunday while seeing a physiotherapist.
