Judge Frank Caprio, the globally beloved star of the hit courtroom show Caught in Providence, has passed away at the age of 88 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. His family confirmed his passing on Wednesday, just hours after he released an emotional video from his hospital bed asking for prayers.

Caprio’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief across the world, with fans, leaders, and fellow judges mourning a man affectionately known as “America’s Nicest Judge.”

For nearly four decades, Caprio served as Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court, but it was his unique style on Caught in Providence that made him a global icon. His rulings, often marked by humor, empathy, and second chances, went viral across social media — turning everyday traffic cases into powerful life lessons on compassion and humanity.

Governor Dan McKee of Rhode Island ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff, calling Caprio “a treasure” and “a symbol of empathy on the bench who reminded us all that justice must be tempered with humanity.”

Caprio retired from the bench in January 2023, though his influence only grew. His courtroom was renamed in his honor later that year, and in early 2025 he published a heartfelt memoir, Compassion in the Court: Life-Changing Stories from America’s Nicest Judge.

The judge revealed his pancreatic cancer diagnosis in December 2023. After completing radiation treatment in 2024, he faced setbacks in recent months. His final public message — a moving bedside video where he asked the world for prayers — has since gone viral, symbolizing both his humility and unwavering faith.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, their five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

For millions who watched him, Judge Frank Caprio was more than a judge — he was a teacher, a father figure, and a reminder that compassion is not weakness, but strength. His legacy will live on in every story he touched, every life he lifted, and every smile he inspired.

May his family find peace in the love he shared, and may the world carry forward his timeless message: justice with a human heart.
