Hoodlums defy curfew in Rivers burn down trucks at Trailer Park

A band of miscreants on Thursday invaded the Trailer Park along Port Harcourt – Oyigbo road and set several trailers that loaded with foodstuff from the northern parts of the country on fire.

The miscreants defied the 24-hour curfew imposed on the entire Oyigbo Local Government Area by the Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday to cause the mayhem.

Victims of the attack, traders and transporters from the north were seen desperately trying to salvage the produce they could from the burning trailers with no help in site from the fire service.

It is not clear why the miscreants attacked the Trailer Park, but it is believed that it was a spillover from violence that came in the awake of the nationwide #endSARS protests by young Nigerians.

No response has yet been got from the police and the state government on the incident at the time of filing this report.

The Rivers State Governor had on Wednesday imposed 24-hour curfew in Oyigbo LGA and some parts of Port Harcourt following violence and breach of peace in the wake of #endSARS protests.

Wike in a broadcast said the curfew extended to Mile 1, Mile 2, Emenike, Ikokwu and Iloaubuchi areas of Port Harcourt Local Government Area as well as Oil Mill area of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of the State.

The governor stated that while government appreciated the peaceful nature of the #endSARS protests, it was clear by the day that the protests had been hijacked by hoodlums to unleash carnage.

Hoodlums had attacked and destroyed Police Stations and Court buildings in Oyigbo Local Government Area of the State. Another set of hooligans were also on rampage at the Ikokwu spare parts markets disturbing public peace and damaging property on Wednesday.

Wike said government could not watch helplessly and allow trouble-makers to take the laws into their hands and use the current situation to create a state of panic and insecurity.

The governor has therefore directed security agencies to enforce the curfew with effect from 6.30 p.m. on 21st October 2020.

“We urge all citizens to remain vigilant and report all suspicious characters to the security agencies for immediate action. Let me appeal to our youths not to allow themselves to be used to roll-back the peace we are enjoying in the State under any pretext” he added.
