FG To Pay Corps Members N500 Daily Feeding Allowance

The Nigerian government has announced that henceforth National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members will receive N500 as daily feeding allowance.

This was disclosed by Johnson Olawunmi, director general of the NYSC at a House of Representatives Committee hearing on the N4,000 online registration fee mandated for corps members.

A civil society group had launched a Say No Campaign to protest the imposition of the new registration fee and dragged the NYSC before the lower legislative chambers.

It was during the public hearing organised by the House on the matter that Olawumi made the announcement about the new feeding allowance.

While responding to the petition, Olawumi, who referred to the poor welfare of the corp

members, disclosed that the federal government approved N500 as feeding allowance for each corp member per day.

He also disclosed that over N800 million was required to setup the computer registration

system the NYSC is presently using for its online registration. He explained that the fees would service a private sector driven build, operate and transfer agreement.

He said the registration equipment would be installed at NYSC offices nationwide. Olawunmi said the Bureau of Public Procurement, approved the process and issued it a certificate of no objection.

While noting that the N4, 000 for the online registration is voluntary, he said rather than request for money to install the infrastructure, he would prefer to canvass for increment of the current N19, 800 allowances being paid to prospective Corp members.
