Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the former Director-General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), has been sentenced to eight years in prison on charges of embezzlement, just months after being disgraced in a sensational sex tape scandal that rocked the nation.

The Bioko Provincial Tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting public funds by disguising personal expenditures as official travel expenses. In addition to his prison term, he was fined $220,000.

Engonga, who became notorious online as “Bello” for his looks, was at the center of a scandal after hundreds of explicit sex tapes surfaced, many filmed in his government office with the wives of top officials. The leaked videos triggered widespread outrage, fueling debates about corruption and morality in Equatorial Guinea’s political elite.

The fallout was swift: the government suspended implicated civil servants, ordered CCTV installations in all public offices, and temporarily restricted the sharing of multimedia files across social media platforms like WhatsApp to stem the scandal’s spread.

Engonga’s sentencing marks a stunning downfall for the once-influential anti-graft chief, who is also a relative of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. His conviction underscores growing public anger over corruption and abuse of power in the oil-rich Central African state.
