21 persons arrested by Rivers State Police command in connection to the killing of three policemen and burning down of police stations in Oyigbo Local Government Area on the 21 of October have been charged for murder and arson before a magistrate court in Port Harcourt.
Some of the suspects, who the police said were members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, were charged with terrorism, illegal gatherings and cultism by the police.
But lawyers to the accused alleged that their clients were framed up by the police without detailed investigation. They asked for bail for the accused, even as they urged the court to remand them at the SCID unit of the Rivers State Police command.
The prosecution team argued that detailed investigations have been carried out before the charges were preferred against the defendants, as such the court should discountenance their arguments and deny the bail applications.
The prosecution team also promised the court that if the case starts in earnest, they will supply convincing evidence against the defendants.
