A 75-year-old pensioner, Paul Nyeche Amadi, has demanded that the police authorities pay him N20milion as compensation for the torture and trauma he suffered in the hands of disbanded SARS operatives.

Amadi told the Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry on Police Brutality that he was forced to relocate to his maternal home when he faced difficulties for over a month following threats to his life by SARS operatives who he alleged were hired to kill him.

He said the trauma that followed his ordeal while in “exile” kept him in hospital for many months.

Meanwhile, the commission had struck out the petition brought by Isoboye Owunari Douglas, on behalf of his family, seeking redress for the torture and harassment meted to members of the family by operatives of the Nigeria Police.

Dismissing the petition, Chairman of the Commission, Chukwunenye Uriri, said the panel could not hear the petition because a judgement has been entered into it by a court.

While striking out the petition, the chairman said, “What you are asking for is outside the scope of the Commission. We are not here to enforce any judgement of the Court. Therefore, your petition is hereby struck out for want of jurisdiction.”

A middle-aged woman, believed to be a member of the family, cried uncontrollably after the petition was struck out.
