The world Health Organization, WHO, on Monday said the Ebola Virus Disease, has killed 2,793 in West Africa, while adding that the disease has been contained in Senegal and Nigeria. The health body in the report of the latest meeting of its Ebola emergency committee said a total of 5,762 people had been infected in five West African countries as of September 18.
In the report, the WHO said Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone by far account for most of the cases and continue to see increasing numbers. Liberia has been mostly hard-hit, with 3,022 cases and 1,578 deaths. “The outbreaks in Senegal and Nigeria are pretty much contained,” the organisation said.
The body said Senegal has not reported any new cases of the deadly virus since it registered its first and only case on August 29. And Nigeria, where 21 people were infected, eight of whom have died, has not reported any new cases since September 8. The WHO said that a meeting of its Ebola emergency committee last week had decided that the outbreak remained a “public health emergency of international concern.”
