For many people, nuts and seeds are snacks, which are readily avoided due to their fatty content, but it has been proven that nuts and seeds are full of dietary essentials. Nuts contain protein, fibre, vitamin E and a good selection of minerals. Nuts may be the healthiest snack food around, because for many years, studies have shown that these nuts – the likes of walnuts, almonds, pecans and others, are healthy foods that can help lower cholesterol.
Such studies further emphasized that people of normal weight who ate about six to seven grammes of nuts per day, which is roughly two hands full, have healthier cholesterol profiles than people who don’t eat nuts. Specifically diets that include nuts have been linked to lower total cholesterol, lower LDL cholesterol and lower triglycerides levels in those with previously high triglyceride. It has also been proven that the more nuts consumed, the more benefits derived.
Nuts are good foods, even though they contain fats, they still have high levels of healthy unsaturated fats. In addition nuts are rich in plant steroids, which may be one of the reason they lower cholesterol; they also improve heart health in other ways.
Seeds too, are natural powerhouses of nutrition. In Nigeria for instance, seeds like linseeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp, sesame seeds and pine nuts, taste great and are fine sources of vitamin E. Seeds are potent, and so one only need a few regularly, as it is also a veritable source of essential fatty acids, which can help to fight prostate malfunctioning and for cholesterol lowering
