John Kerry, the United States Secretary of State, has said that one of the best ways Nigeria can deal with the Boko Haram insurgency is to ensure the forthcoming February General elections hold on time, on schedule and is an improvement on the previous elections.
Kerry stated this on Sunday while briefing journalists after a closed door meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan and General Mohammadu Buhari both leading contenders in the upcoming Presidential election.
The US Secretary of State who condemned Boko Haram attacks and extended condolences to families of victims of such attacks added that anyone who plans or participate in widespread violence against the people will be held accountable by the US government.
As the Presidential election approaches, Kerry applauded the fact that both Buhari and Jonathan have signed a non violence pact and added that, “these are commitments that need to be kept.”
He also warned that after the elections, “whatever differences that may exist should be resolved through legitimate processes. Candidates should do all that is necessary to keep the peace.”
Kerry said part of the message he brought to Nigeria is that “nobody gains through violence. Our hope is that Nigeria will set a remarkable example to the rest of the world through this election.”
